Birthdays and Sweets in School – a reminder

For a number of years now we have turned a ‘blind eye’ to children, on their birthdays, providing sweets for their classmates to take home. It’s a kind thing to do, and in moderation reasonable. Unfortunately, what was a very occasional event has multiplied and it is time to bring this tradition to an end. Whilst COVID precautions can be used as a contributory reason (and I am keenly aware that this is seriously beginning to grate), frankly the whole thing also conflicts with our Healthy eating encouragement in school, and so we ask that no more sweets are brought in. ‘Happy Birthday’ can still be sung…Thank you.

School meals & snacks

MEALS

All state funded infant school children (i.e. those in reception, year 1 and year 2) now receive a free school lunch.

  • If an infant child has opted in, a meal will be prepared and claimed for daily.
  • If an infant child has opted out of the service they will be required to bring a packed lunch daily

The Warrington school meals catering service provides your child with healthy, filling and nutritional meals every school day.

A balanced diet gives children energy, helps them to concentrate in the classroom and teaches them the importance of being healthy as they grow into adults.

School meals are available to reception children right up to sixth form college students and are priced at £2.40 per day (from 1/11/19) from Year 3 upwards.

Universal infant free school meals

From September 2014, all state funded infant school children (i.e. those in reception, year 1 and year 2) will receive a free school lunch.

The School Food Plan presented evidence that universal free school meals leads to positive improvements in health, attainment and social cohesion, and help families with the cost of living.

You are able to access further information on the school food plan website.

Quality of meals

As part of the school lunch a pupil will receive a two course meal with a drink.  This will include a protein item accompanied with potatoes, rice or pasta and fresh vegetables, a dessert and a drink.

All food and drinks served in Warrington schools meet the government's standards for school food. Food is prepared on site using fresh ingredients. We don't transport food from one school to another (unless an emergency situation arises).

Special dietary needs

Vegetarian, multi-cultural and special dietary items are included in our menu plans.

Any specific concerns or requests can be dealt with by contacting the school meals catering service.

SNACKS

Children in nursery and reception pay for their snacks on a weekly/half termly basis.  The staff will inform you of the amount at the start of each half term.

Morning snacks are available to purchase by children from the school kitchen for Y1-Y6 children (Reception/Nursery have their own systems). Toast with milk/water/juice available - set price 50p per day and this can only be paid by cash on the day.
